General Tips and Advice

Open Concept

Open floor plans or open concept living spaces have been very trendy in recent years. These spaces involve removed walls to allow you to have a view and continuous  flow from different areas of your home such as kitchen to dining room to living room. Successfully decorating these types of spaces can be done many different ways you can allow each section to have its own unique look or you can have each section feel like one large great room; or even a little of both.

You may also want to think of the function of each space. For example let’s say we are doing a Kitchen Dining and Living room area. In this situation weather you want to have a structured pallet of colors or each room to have its own feel or maybe decorate the kitchen and dining room similarly, you want to structure each section to bring our what it is. In the kitchen you may want to use a large island and make that the focal point while in the living room area have a big sectional or maybe an accent chair to highlight the main purpose of the room, in the dining area the table should be a dead giveaway.

You can also use sections of the rooms as multipurpose if the layout is thought of beforehand. For instance if you can align your island with seating on the back with the area you will be placing your couch or sitting area, this would extend the seating area when you have company over.

If your room becomes HUGE and you were only planning the 3 basic rooms you may want to think about breaking it down further. I know you wanted open but not every part needs to be utilized always you could make a cute little sitting area with just two chairs and a coffee table or if you like music a piano section or an area for kids to play. When you have room to make more areas it’s really the best kind of problem.

Designing Her “Big Girl Room”

As little girls grow older, they want and assert more independence and adventure out while trying to figure out who they are. Every girl wants a bedroom that is fun and embodies who she is.

For starters, spicing up the room up with bright fun colors is always a great place to begin this transformation. Try letting them choose two colors that blend well together. For example two shades of purple or a purple/pink combination. This will allow them to choose colors they like and are inspired by, while you still being able to say you opinion as well.

Next, try adding some funky furniture. Ikea and Target have great funky and original looking pieces that are relatively inexpensive and can really liven up the room. Look for furniture that is comfortable yet exciting. Such as fury bean bag chair, fuzzy rugs, egg shaped chairs or small hammocks. Having a really cool lamp is always interesting too. The right lighting in a room could truly make all the difference. Simple changes such as adding throw pillows to the bed or changing the bedding in general can also be a great addition or change to the room.

Decorative stickers are always a plus and add more of a personal touch to the design. Depending on the age of the girl; there’s a wide variety to choose from. It can be her favorite Disney character, motivational quotes, butterfly stickers or their initials. Great thing about the stickers is that your choices are endless. If you really want to think out of the box; your local retail stores carry chalk board stickers that come in all shapes and it’s cool for all ages. Which can be used for several reasons; such as a calendar, a things to do board or a signature space for their friends.

There is no major rhyme or reason to putting the room together. At the end of the day; the goal is to make sure the room is fun, inviting, and filled with all things she loves which makes her feel special.

Fall Decor on a Budget

Fall Decor on a Budget

A new season is here, totally time to redecorate and bring some fall into the house. Only problem is, most of the gorgeous pieces advertised, are always out of the budget. Luckily, we have the internet to provide us with some great DIY tips. One of my favorite ideas I’ve used over the last year is buying things from the dollar store and redesigning them to look a little more high end. Not only does it save me a lot of money, its a fun challenge to see how I can customize things.

On my first trip to the dollar store this season, I found quite a few things to stock up on. I got some plastic pumpkins (they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes), fake leaves, candles, felt cut outs (shaped like leaves, acorns, and pumpkins), a whole bunch of silk flowers (in fall colors of course), and a vases. A lot of items can be reused when you change it up for the season, but some pieces you might want to keep for the following year (depending on how good they come). I also stocked up on some hot glue, spray paint, and glitter paint (a lot of which I had leftover from my last crafting project).

My first project was the pumpkins. I chose to go with a white theme – just to match the colors that I have in my living and dining room, but you can chose whatever matches. It took a couple coats of paints, but it magically transformed the pumpkins into high end looking pieces. Some of them were open at the top (to be filled with candy) so I filled those up with the flowers, and some of the pumpkins didn’t have the holes in them.

I was able to use the felt shapes to create the effect of a runner on my dining room table – hot glued the pieces together just to make sure they didn’t move around too much. I then coated the insides of the vases with glitter spray, and used them as candle holders – really high end look for only a few dollars – and likely a piece I can use again during the holidays.

The best part is, it really gives you a chance to make it your own. When you head to the store, don’t pay attention to the colors/materials things are made out of – just imagine what you can make them look like. And have fun!

Turn a broken picture frame into an earring holder

When you break the glass out of a picture frame, don’t throw away the base. Instead, use it to create a gorgeous and very functional earring display. You’ll need some sort of wire to hang your earrings on. Just run the wire across the frame and then hang up your earrings. This is a great gift ideal for all ages and you can run as much wire, making as many levels, as you want. If you have longer earrings that dangle, make longer levels.

Create a recycling center with an old basket

If you have a rather large basket that seems to becoming apart at the seams, you can re-purpose that basket into a great recycling center. The basket doesn’t really need to be able to hold anything so hole in the bottom are fine. You simply place waste baskets inside the wicker basket for recycling and then label the sections so you know where everything goes. Not only does this help you put that torn up basket to good use, it gives you a really attractive place to store your recyclables.

Be Bold!

A beach themed bedroom can provide a mini vacation during drab seasons of the year. Paint the walls in relaxing colors found at the beach and accessorize with souvenirs from beach vacations. The beach theme sets a relaxing tone perfect for a bedroom. Shells are an attractive and inexpensive way to accessorize. Contain a collection of small shells in a glass bowl. Arrange large shells on night stands and shelves. Fill a shadow box with favorite shells and hang on the wall. Use bedding that incorporates a shell design. Beach colors include shades of tan, white, blue, green and brown. Go with a crisp blue and white palette, or use a combination of several beach colors on the wall. Use wall paper or border emphasizing light, airy colors such as white, tan, light blue or green. Or, use dark colors to give the room the feel of a light house or boat house. Decorate with items found along the beach. Use framed posters and prints of hot dog stands and changing booths. Add sailboats, life preservers and palm trees. Use light colored woods and wicker for picture frames and accents. Decorate your windows in style with light colored room darkening cellular shades with top down bottom up feature that will give you that warm and cool feeling but still giving you privacy. Most importantly go heavy on the beach theme with bedding printed with shells, waves or palm trees. Or apply a light touch by using solid colored sheets and blankets in beach colors. Consider adding decorative pillows with beach themes. Having your bedroom “beached out” adds a sense of love for nature and also clean, breezy with a coastal style.
