Each year as the month of December comes to an end, people find themselves making resolutions for the new year ahead and setting individual goals. Many people do this because they are tired of procrastinating and have come to accept the changes they need to make to become better. So why not make a resolution to get your house in the style and shape that you want? We all at some point feel this way, as homeowners and renters. You have that “ahh” moment where you realize that you have been looking at the same paint job and window treatments, since your daughter was born; and now she is in middle school! So why not change this? While you’re coming up with resolutions to make yourself better, add a few more to that list in homage to your house.

Tis the Season to make this House a Home

By: Meghan

Fall- the air is as crisp as granny smith apples. The leaves have changed from green to gold, to russet, to pumpkin orange. We are bundling up, drinking hot cider, and some homes have that tell tale silver smoke coming from chimneys. We are warming our homes, our hearts are full, and soon our bellies will match. Loved ones will be flocking like geese soon to our homes- and oh no! Our tables are set with our finest china, with Autumn colored runners- in rich browns, greens, reds, yellows- we have our best silver- but our windows! So long basic vinyl and aluminum, items that we bought ions ago to cover windows, items that came with the house, things to put on windows, but things that don’t have our touch, our signature! We need items to turn this house into a home!

Decorating a Formal Space on a Budget

By: Sherry

Decorating formal living spaces can be an expensive project. People think they need roman shades to create formality, when there are many types of shades or blinds that can dress up windows for less. When picking your blind or shade, choosing one with a pattern, valance, or deep rich tone can change the feeling in your room into a formal atmosphere. This can be achieved with a patterned roller shade, a decorative valance on a faux or real wood blind, or a dark espresso pleated or cellular shade. Decorating with any of the these choices in a blind or shade is less expensive then a roman shade and helps create a formal space.

Roam on over to the Romans: Flat vs. Classic

By: Aisha

When it comes to roman shades, which is better: flat or classic? The only difference is the style. Flat romans are made of several panels sewn together and by the name, they are flat. When pulled up, the panels disappear underneath the valance piece that comes attached to the shade, functioning more like a roller shade. On the other hand, the classic roman is completely different cosmetically. It is made of one piece of cloth and it bubbles out, so when it is drawn up, it doesn’t hide behind the valance but rather looks more like a decorative curtain.

Roman Shades – Overrated?

By: Karen

A few months after moving into my new house, I realized that it was time for some shades. I didn’t really need them too much for privacy being the house was set away from the street, but my windows really looked bare with nothing on them. I had asked my friends for some different suggestions, and gotten a few responses, but the most common response I got was that I absolutely had to do roman shades throughout my first floor. To be honest, I am not too familiar with window treatments, so I checked them out in the houses of the friends that had suggested them, and honestly I really did like the look of them. They were a finished look, and really decorative. To be honest, the only downside was they were very dressy, and the décor throughout my house isn’t that formal, but I figured there had to be some more casual patterns than what my friends had, so I set out on an investigation.

Roman Shades for an Elegant Room

By: Brenna

My formal dining room was all but complete and I just needed to find appropriate window treatments. My walls are a rich red and my molding and furniture is a deep almond stain.
The room is elegant yet simple; the colors are the main attraction and everything else is more subdued. I prefer a clean, tailored look, so I wanted to stay away from heavy drapes.

Unfortunately, once curtains are eliminated, the options for a shade fancy enough to withstand my dining room are slim. I knew I’d want to incorporate some sort of color to showcase the windows, but nothing too flashy and extreme.

Roman shades as an alternative to drapes

By: Dominic

Due to a recent career change my wife and I moved into a new place in Boston. The condo is on the first floor of the building and has a large picture window in the front of it which is visible from the street. We needed to put some sort of window treatment on the window because of the lack of privacy. We had mini blinds in our old house which worked out well, but my wife does not care for the look of them. We also had curtains in some of the windows in our old place but my wife did not care for the maintenance that they required.
