Bedroom Window Treatments General Tips and Advice

One Room At A Time: Bedroom Window Treatments

While window treatments are critical in every room in the house, the bedroom might be the most important. Depending on your personal preferences, there are a variety of different options that might work best for you.

Blackout Options:
If you are a just a night owl, that loves to sleep in, or work overnights, blackouts might be for you. The best blackout option is blackout cellular shades. These polyester shades are constructed of multiple layers of fabric lined with aluminum that is assembled to create a honeycomb shape. They fit snugly inside your window and do not allow any light to pass through the material. A blackout roller shade is the second best option – and available in a lot more styles and patterns, but will allow some light in around the edges, just by the nature of how they are hung. But, add a simple curtain and you will quickly block out the light coming in around the edges.

Privacy Options:
A lot of us can not drag ourselves out of bed if we can’t see the sun in the morning, but are looking for an option that will block out the neighbors. Luckily, the majority of shades do allow you to get some privacy while allowing some natural light to filter through. You can again go with the simplicity of a light filtering cellular shade (without the aluminum lining), or a roller shade. If you are looking for more of a statement piece, a roman shade is also a great option, with an overall finished look, you can quickly add pattern, style, and statement to your bedroom.

A little of both:
If you love the light during the week, but long to sleep in on a Saturday morning, a blind might be the best option for you. It will give you complete privacy while it is closed, and can be tilted to adjust how much or how little light you want to let in (keep in mind it is not completely blackout but it is in fact room darkening). Blinds are available in a variety of different materials, ranging from the less expensive 1” aluminum slats, to a 2” faux wood (vinyl imitating real wood), to 2” real wood slats (that may pair well with wood furniture or floors).
When purchasing window treatments, especially any that are specially made for your windows it is always important to keep in mind that they are an investment. The best rule of thumb is to go neutral with the hard treatment, and if you want to dress up the window a little more add a soft treatment. You can change a curtain out fairly easily and inexpensively, whether it’s a mood change or simply a season change.

One Room At A Time: Bedroom Trends

While it’s hard to imagine updating your bedroom every year, it is still important to be in touch with the current trends. If it happens to be time for an overall makeover of your room or just time to make a few small changes, you want to make sure you are keeping up to date with the style of the year! Like most other years, 2017 has brought some of its own trends, as well as carried over a few from last year.

Colors:
Continue to keep in mind the earlier advice that you want to keep your bedroom as your own relaxing retreat, so when it comes to colors, make sure not to overdo it. The bolder colors that appear as trending colors, are great to use as accent pieces, where the most muted neutral tones are best used as wall and flooring colors. This year, the bolder colors consist of deeper teals and blues with a gray undertone. The more neutral tones also stay within the gray family but are much lighter tones, also along the blue family – imagine very pale shades of slate blue.

Patterns:
Once again, patterns are in for 2017. Trends have moved away from the very simple, clean lines and continue to introduce patterns. Bold patterns continue to appear in accent pieces, as well as wallpapered accent walls. Geometric prints, including chevrons, basket weaves, trellis, and diamond shapes are appearing in rugs, curtains, and bedding. The fashion this year encourages mixing and matching different patterns as well – you don’t want to get different colors of chevron for different areas in the room, but you may match a chevron curtain, with a more subtle patterned comforter.

Furniture:
In terms of furniture, we are seeing a lot of trends carrying over from 2016. Upholstered headboards are a statement that is definitely back in style this year. It is a great accent piece of furniture – being that it is unnecessary to match to any other furniture in the room, and is available in a lot of muted colors with a lot of texture, or again available covered in the fabrics that will bring a lot of pop into a room. Also similar to years past are the two most common finishes for furniture. A painted gray finish, which is available in all furniture stores, or is a great way to repurpose old furniture and make it new again with a simple coat of paint. Or natural wood finishes, in darker tones that really showcase of the natural wood grains.

Overall, keeping all of the styles in mind, make sure to make it your own. If you don’t love a color that is popular this year, stay away from it, and perhaps chose a piece with a pattern to mix in. If you love the colors that are popular this year, embrace them. At the end of the day, it’s your room, make it your own!

One Room At A Time: Bedroom Overview

As we start a journey through the home from a decorating perspective, what better place to start than the room you spend the most time in, the bedroom.  The room where you wake up to begin your day, where you go to put the day behind you at night, and the room that is easiest to escape to when you just need a break from everyday life.  A lot of the time the bedroom gets left off the remodeling and updating plans. People often think there are a lot of spaces in the house other people are going to see, but when you realize it is the room you spend the most time in, shouldn’t it be top of the priority list?

The best part of redecorating a bedroom is there are so many elements that can be changed and updated.  From a full renovation to a simple change, there are a lot of ways to make adjustments to the room depending on your budget and the time you want to invest in the project.  A full renovation can tackle changing the flooring, wall color, and even purchasing a new set of furniture. You can change out an old carpet to fresh new hardwoods for a huge impact.  You can purchase new furniture to replace hand me down furniture or old pieces to refresh your room in a matter of minutes.  Or, if you are looking for smaller changes, you can switch up the soft treatments in the room – think bedding, window treatments, or area rugs. Updating a bedding set from dull and updated to bright and colorful will instantly make an impact on the room.  Changing out the window treatments, whether you invest in new blinds or shades, or just change out the curtains, can instantly reshape the look of the room.

The key element to keep in mind when looking at your room is that you want a place to relax. You want to wake up relaxed, go to bed in a peaceful place, and have a sanctuary to escape to when the hustle and bustle of daily life gets in the way. With that in mind, simplicity is usually the best rule of thumb.

A Minute On Curtains

A Minute on Curtains

Whether you’re completely redecorating a room, or just looking to give a room a special touch, the right curtain can be a great help.  But with so many options out there, choosing the right curtain can be a challenge.  After selecting between the light filtering and darkening options and the regular and decorative rods and accessories, it really comes down to color.

With typical paint and blind selections staying in the neutral colors like variations of white and recently, grays, the choice of color regarding curtains becomes increasingly useful in completing a room.  Bright and bold colors in draped sheers or simple panels are great contrasting additions to any room that is painted a neutral color.  They are good starting places to match pillows and other accent items.

Floor to ceiling panels in a bold print are popular because they add design to a room as well as dress the window up.  And if you’re looking to try something different, try going “rod-less.”  More and more options are emerging to do away with the curtain rod such as magnets and metal rings.  These options allow for more freedom when hanging the curtains so that you can adhere the curtains on angles instead of the traditional straight line, making them even more unique.

Floral Bathroom?

By: Karen

Bath-Pleat_015I went shopping the other day, and found a floral shower curtain, that I absolutely fell in love with.  I know, most people probably don’t feel quite so strongly about shower curtains, but I really liked it. Taking a step back, I currently have a white shower curtain, with tiny light blue circles all over it, which, if you didn’t stop to stare, are so subtle you probably wouldn’t notice (and that is representative of my entire decorating style).
