General Inspiration Tips and Advice

Green Living

There is no escaping it; GOING GREEN is all the rage now-a-days – and for good reason too! Everyone wants to have a part in saving the planet, but you don’t think about the easy ways to incorporate that into your home decor as well. We have put together some great ideas from paints, to art work to window coverings that will help you create a “green home” through your decor.

Now, we have touched on window coverings a lot in past blogs but not so much the green aspect of them. There are TONS of options to have green window coverings throughout your home, even if you wanted something different for each room! First we have the natural choice (no pun intended) of Natural Woven Wood shades. These shades are made up of natural grasses, bamboo and fibers to create beautiful window coverings that both bring a bold statement to a room and are a perfect way to create a “green” living space. The best part about these is the options; you can have them plain so they are see through, have a light filtering liner put onto them for a little more privacy, or even a blackout liner for complete darkness incase you wanted to use them in a bedroom.

Another great option for window coverings are Cellular Shades. These shades are also known as “Honeycomb shades” due to the shade itself looking like a honeycomb when you view it from the side. These honeycombs, or “cells”, create air pockets which help to insulate; keeping cold air out and warm air in or vice versa depending on the season. You can typically find them in a variety of colors and a ton of neutral colors as well. Personally, i think they pair very nicely with paneled drapes on either side – in which you can also find “green” fabrics that are made from natural fibers and recycled materials as well!

Let’s move onto paint. “Paint isn’t “green”.” you say? On the contrary, perhaps you’re not looking for the right paint. They now make paints that are Eco-Friendly! These paints are typically made with low VOCs, low biocides and natural pigments. To get a truely “green” paint you need to get paint that has VOC levels between 0-100gm/l. The coolest thing is that they make milk paint and natural paints which use, you guessed it, milk protein, citrus, minerals and lime.

Finally we touch on the part of most rooms that really give the meaning of decor; the artwork. Every home has artwork, whether it’s an old vase your Grandmother passed down to you, your child’s macaroni artwork from school or a $10,000 painting over the mantel piece. Art is a loose term that is covered over many fields, therefore this makes it easy to incorporate “green” art into your home! Many retailers now sell recyclable products such as bins, frames and vases which make it easy for you to decorate your home. You can also check out Pinterest or other online DIY sites to see millions of ideas to create your own artwork from recycled items found in your very own home as well!

The sky is the limit with your green living, now go out there and save your plant one room at a time!

One Room At A Time: Kitchen Decorating 101

Since the kitchen is the room in my house people always tend to see when they stop by, I always love to keep the room looking clean, up to date, and refreshed. It’s the place you’ll gather for a cup of coffee after the kids leave for school, where the family will gather to celebrate events, and the room you’ll relax in with friends after a long week of work. That being said, it’s always easier to keep it simple from a decorating perspective.
– Use your everyday items as décor. – For example, the pretty coffee cups you use on a regular basis can be hung above the counter from simple hooks – not only does it take clutter off the counter, but the color in the cups can then accent your décor! Another example is using glass jars to store your fruit. Fruit is also colorful and decorative, and generally, you need somewhere to store it as well – use the decorative containers you were given last Christmas to show them off!
– Add greenery. – Depending on how you much counter space you have, figure out where it makes the most sense to bring in some plants. If you are low on space, don’t waste it – find a corner where you can get some hanging shelves and fill them with plants. Use them as a centerpiece on your kitchen table – it will force you to make sure the table doesn’t fill with clutter too! If you have the space on your counter, use it to your advantage and add a few small plants to brighten it up.
– Use chalkboards. – Depending on the household there are lots of fun uses for chalkboards in the kitchen. You can use to with your partner to remember what meals you shopped for at the beginning of the week if you have kids you can use it to keep track of after-school activities or even chores. If you just love to entertain you can add fun quotes and sayings that are different every time your friends stop by!
– Bring in some color. – Although the kitchen is a room without a lot of fabric treatments, you can always find a way to bring in some color. For starters, throw an area rug down under the kitchen table, or a runner in front of the sink. Rugs are a fun way to bring in a trendy color or pattern without being overly committed to it. You could also add a valance or window treatment with some color for fairly inexpensive.

Decor For The Common Space

Spring time is the best time for cleaning and redecorating the home. If you are seeing ideas to for revamping your common space that will leave it looking fresh and springy, here are a couple of ideas that will leave you in a great mood.

Keeping things neat.

Keep a brightly colored box or a oversized woven basket that goes well with the spring theme in the common area to hold your everyday used items, such as a remote, magazines, or keys. That way everything will stay clutter free and tidy.

Plants

While we are still in the common area, why not bring some nature into the space, by adding plants. Faux plants works well if you do not want to worry about watering the for the whole season. And to also create a laid back look for the entertainment area between the get togethers with your friends, adding a Mediterranean inspired tray on the coffee with fruit on it, instead of magazines goes well with the spring theme.

Throw pillows

Adding bright colors, such as lemon yellow, lime green, or sky blue colored case on your pillows also goes with the spring theme. And if you want to jazz it up even more, adding cases with zig zags or geometric shapes will go a long way.

Carpet

Removing your dark and heavy wool carpet you had all winter long with something light and airy is a great way to go. If you don’t like the idea of keeping the carpet, exposing the hardwood floor or tiles is a great way to make the space feel less cluttered.

Window dressing

After all that work you can’t forget about your windows. A great product I would recommend is the Fiji Bamboo- Roman shade to bring the nature material of the outdoors inside.

Outdoor Living

Make the outdoors your home

Home is how you make it, and part of home is that wonderful outdoor space that makes home even better. Make it pretty with comfortable weather friendly furniture, pretty pillows, mood setting lanterns and fresh flowers.  A bench that is nice enough to be a local point but practical enough to use all summer long. Make it yummy with one pot herbs to grow right on your outdoor table for fresh picking all summer long.  Make it warm it seating surrounding a fire pit for cool evenings or for roasting s’mores. Make it light and romantic with bevy of lanterns hanging from trees to sparkle and light the evening breeze.  Make it open and airy with patio doors that fold back. Make it cool and refreshing with water features that relax the body, mind and soul. Make it feel spacious with a perfectly placed mirror. It can make the space feel twice the size and reflect twice the foliage, flowers and fun. Outdoor drapery adds shade or privacy.  Make it feel comfy and cozy with beach towel throws, pretty pillows, and outdoor furnishings. Make over a porch with a few items (day bed, potted plants, and Chinese lanterns) that will make the space comfortable and stylish. Thinking creatively can also help you stick to a budget. There’s no reason why a trunk from inside can’t step in as your outdoor coffee table. Besides, it’s only for a season. When it comes to outdoor dining, anything goes. But to capture an easygoing escape to the weekend home feeling, make an attempt to separate yourself from your daily routine. Start by setting the table and chairs on the lawn and away from your home, which will create a dining experience that is unique and unexpected.

You can start off with cleaning up your lawn and garden.  Get rid of the unwanted weeds, wild flowers, mow the lawn, and use a good fertilizer to keep the grass healthy and beautiful .  Then plant some new flowers to add some of those beautiful colours to your garden.  These days, garden centres are available everywhere, and it is easy to get what you want, and some good advice from those centres about how to maintain your plants properly.  If you do not have a deck, and want to put patio furniture outside, consider laying out some patio stones to put the furniture on.  These bring a classy elegance to the backyard for you and your guests to enjoy.

As for inside your home, start off by trimming the plants and flowers. Then you can start fresh by replacing old clay pots with pretty pastel coloured ones for a bright and playful Spring look.  Also consider going to your local florist and picking out some nice cherry blossom branches, and putting them in clear glass vases.  A few flowers by your windows, or on your coffee table, will liven up the space and bring a fresh feel to any room.  If you prefer having guests over at night, you can purchase a remote control underwater LCD light, to put in your vases, and turn them on to create a very unique look.
