To Have A Window Treatment, Or Not: That Is The Question

While decorating a home, sometimes you find you find yourself in the predicament of deciding whether to treat the windows with window coverings or to leave them plain. More often, window treatments are a needed for privacy, light control, or sometimes both. The need for privacy is most common, especially in our bedrooms and bathrooms. Light control can be desired in bedrooms and for rooms with television viewing, but it may also be necessary for spaces where direct sunlight can do damage. Harsh sunlight can cause fading and damage to interior furnishings, and that can be very costly to homeowners. In the case where window coverings are not needed at all, many homeowners still elect to decorate with window treatments for aesthetic reasons because they are the perfect interior accent. Window coverings can impact positively on the overall look of a room.

For example, in my case, the back of our home is totally private, so we really don’t need any window coverings in the family room, kitchen or mud room. My husband likes the clean lines and architectural look of our moldings and wants to keep the windows plain. For me, I much prefer the warm look of fabric, and the texture and color we could add with even simple drapery panels or mock roman shades. Well, it has been six years since we have renovated and those windows are still bare. I have yet to tackle this window treatment dilemma, as I have had other more pressing projects. It could be a battle with hubby, but I am ready to take it on.

Here are the questions to consider when deciding if you should dress your windows.

Out of Necessity:

Do I need privacy?

Is the sun glaring in, will furnishings fade? Do I need light control?

Is it drafty? Will insulating fabrics help keep drafts out and reduce heat loss?

Aesthetic Reasons:

Will window treatments compliment and perhaps update existing decor?

Is the room too bare or does it lack warmth?

Do I want to change the look seasonally?

I hope this gets you to think about your own window treatment needs!

Poor Man Top Down Bottom Up

By: Erica

The other day I was doing my early morning stretches like I always do on my Wii fit, and was rudely interrupted by someone peeking into my room. I was absolutely floored knowing that I can’t be in the privacy of my own home without someone peeking in at me. They are either looking at my plasma TV or me, not to toot my own horn, but I think me. (ha) Now, I don’t have anything currently on the window and didn’t plan on getting anything since it is just a work out room, but apparently I need to. I just keep getting hit with expenses since I moved into this condo! I thought I was in the clear since all the other windows were covered with blinds (they are huge windows). Which actually makes me question why this one wasn’t? So frustrating that I have to cover this great window, I have a great view of the center courtyard garden and was hoping not to close it off. The unit I am in doesn’t have too many windows that get sunlight like this one does! (I guess that might be why it’s not covered…). Regardless, I NEED something to give me some privacy, light, and is cheap!

I love blinds! But we need to sleep!

By: Karen

I’ve come to a dilemma.  I really, really like blinds more than shades.  What I mean is, I love the idea of being able to control the light and privacy.  My husband on the other hand, likes sleep, and the blinds that we have don’t block out enough light to allow him to sleep.  Obviously, I’m referring to my bedroom.  A long time ago, we decided that we were done with curtains.  We took down all of the curtains, all of the rods, and had a professional come in and patch up all of the holes.  (Let me rephrase, I didn’t just have curtains, I had drapes, in front of panels, in front of sheers).

Sheer-Light filtering- Room Darkening- Blackout

By: Sai

These terms are so important in the blind world but how is the regular consumer supposed to know the difference. I know I sure didn’t until I went looking for blinds.  My goodness, I still have a headache!  Every room has some type of different requirement that I wanted follow. So guess what I am doing for this blog. I will teach everyone the difference between requirements, and how I used each throughout my house. This will be a long strenuous process. It will hurt your brain, but in the end you will enjoy it! Let’s begin!

Home Away from Home

By: Karen

As I laid down in bed at a bed and breakfast last weekend, I stopped and asked myself – why isn’t my mattress at home – the one I sleep in every night – this comfy?? It literally feels like I’m sleeping on a cloud.  Unfortunately, like most things, it’s not in the budget. Neither is a TV like the flat screen LED in the room, or a maid to clean up after me and do my laundry.  I feel like everyone needs to escape at least once a year just to relax and enjoy these amenities.

Verticals are they extinct?

By: Sai
If verticals are really extinct why are there so many choices? Why are there so many colors? Why are there so many patterns and options? Why can I get them with a backing? I just don’t understand this is a confusing matter. Why are people still buying them? I was watching tv and on  they were saying how verticals are an out dated look.  They say out there that it’s an old lady look with the floral patterns. When they are plain they portray more of an office look. To add to this supposedly they can be loud when the wind blows them left to right and they break easily at the top.

My New Bay Window

By: Stef

I just moved into a new apartment last week. It’s huge, spacious, and has a nice open floor plan. Right in the front of the house, there is a huge bay window – two small angled windows, and one large pane in the middle. It’s great, except I feel like my life is a show for all of the neighbors to watch every night, because they can clearly see everything we do.

Blinds, the Best of Both Worlds!

By: AnnaKay

I just recently bought 2″ faux wood blinds for my apartment, and I absolutely love them! At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to put faux wood blinds in the windows. I wasn’t sure if I should get real wood, I wasn’t even sure if cellular shades would be a better option – they seem to be the newest fad. Then, I thought, what’s the reason I’m buying these? Maybe that would help me to narrow down the options.
