Keeping That Ocean View

By: Kimberly

A while back I moved into a condo on the Boston waterfront. One of the main reasons I took the place was because the living room had full sun all day, which kept everything well lit and vibrant. Although I love the amount of sun, I had started to notice my furniture fading. I also started to feel a bit guilty about keeping the air conditioner on high in the summer, but I couldn’t bring myself to block the view!

Cold and Drafty

By: Karen

It’s winter. Again. Which means its time to get out the heavy blankets, wool coats, and warm sweaters. It’s time to change the curtains out from the delicate sheers, and replace them with the heavy drapes. The sweaters and jackets, I can deal with. Really because there is no other option. But taking those drapes out again, got me to thinking, what else can I do with these windows??

Cellular Shades For My Living Room

By: Dominic

I live in a three bedroom apartment in the city and have a large picture window in my living room. I had a thin fabric sheer over the window but no blinds. I didn’t really get any privacy from the curtain that hangs over the window which kind of annoyed me. Another problem is the draft that I’ve been feeling coming through the window. I never really noticed the draft until the temperature started dropping, and with winter fast approaching I decided that I needed to do something about it. I heard of cellular shades and how they are a great insulator for your windows and I decided to check them out and see if they would be a good fit for me.

I’m All Grown Up Now I Must Buy Blinds

By: Erica

Imagine you have just moved into your first place. Gone are the days of your childhood bedroom, dorm rooms, and apartments. This place belongs to you, and with that ownership comes a lot of things you never thought about before.
The windows are bare and you are painfully aware of how little privacy you have. This is not an apartment where blinds come already installed and you decide you are too mature to hang a sheet from the window with pushpins. You want something nice, something grown up, something elegant. You consider window treatments. Should you buy shutters, curtains, or blinds? You have no idea, so you make a list of things you want from your window treatment, ultimate privacy, inexpensive, and easy to install. You walk around your new place and feel the draft from the windows. You add “protects against heat and cold” to your list. You also notice the heavy layer of dust that has collected on the window sills and you want to sneeze just looking at it. You add “doesn’t collect dust” to your list. Then you remember that you like to sleep late on the weekend and you add “shuts out light” to your list as well. You get in the car and drive to your local home improvement store to see if you can find something that meets your criteria.

Sun’s Heating Up, Are you Keeping Up?

By: Karen

As the warm weather quickly approaches, it is time to remember what I said in the middle of the summer last year – you need to figure out how to make this house cooler!! Unfortunately, central air is definitely not in the budget, so I suppose it’s time to hit the internet to find out what do-it-myself tips I can find out there.

Bigger vs Smaller

By:   AnnaKay

We bought a house about a year ago that has a good size sunroom.  The sunroom is in the front of the house.  It gets really hot in the summer, and really drafty in the winter.  My husband and I like to spend time in the sun room,  mostly in the morning to drink our coffee and sometimes at night.  I’d heard about the cellular shades that are supposed to insulate by keeping the room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.  So I started researching, because I only wanted to do this once and I wanted to make sure that I was getting the best product that would help me with this issue.
