Summertime Window Solutions

By Gina G.

Summer is here with its longer days and brighter sunshine.  Although enjoyable, these seasonal weather changes can bring spikes in cooling costs.  If you have windows to cover this summer, here’s the top choices that will help against the rise in temperatures:

Cellular Shades – As their structure is designed to insulate windows, cellular shades are the primary choice for many seeking to keep the summer heat at bay.  Cellular, or honeycomb, shades come in a variety of colors and are offered with control options too (cordless, top down/bottom up, motorized).  And, depending on the levels of sun and heat the space experiences, you can opt for either a light filtering or black out cellular shade.  Light filtering would suffice for low to medium sun exposure or areas where natural light is beneficial.  Blackout cellular shades are great options where the sun and its effects are intolerable.

Blackout Curtains – Blackout curtains are great summer window treatments because they are functional but not permanent.  As they have a black out liner on them, blackout curtains will do wonders to keeping the heat from entering a space.  But also keep in mind that they will also darken the space significantly.  The best thing about blackout curtains, however, is that they are panels and therefore not fixed like a blind or shade.  When the space is hot and you want to keep it cool, draw the curtains.  Other times when insulation is not so important, keep the panels open.  And, blackout curtains are offered in such a wide variety of styles and prints, you don’t have to sacrifice décor to achieve your insulation needs.

Bamboo Shades – Bamboo shades combine both function and design for the summertime.  Functionally, bamboo shades are natural insulators since they are usually comprised of wood.  In addition, due to their sheerness in absence of a liner, most people opt to put a liner on their bamboo shades.  This liner, whether light filtering/privacy liner or a black out liner, will perform similar to that of the blackout curtains.  It should dramatically reduce the amount of sunlight (and its effects) to a space.  Design-wise, bamboo shades with their composition of woods, chutes and grasses are certainly trending as a great way to bring the natural environment into the home.

Two-Toned Cabinets

If you’re looking to spice up or add flare to your kitchen, a popular trend emerged towards the end of 2017; Two-Toned Cabinets. This trend is sure to carry on into 2018 (and already has!) giving your kitchen a whole new look. This process allows you to incorporate a new color, not only into your kitchen, but to the surrounding rooms as well. It allows you to highlight different aspects or  decor pieces in your kitchen as well.

One of the best ways to use two-toned cabinets is to draw the eye and attention to them. For instance, a large island is a great example of where you would want to make it stand out; or to change your upper and lower cabinets into different colors. This is a great way to add warmth by using a darker shade on the bottom, and a warmer tone on top. You can also choose to go the high-contrast route where maybe you do something like go with a navy or red to really make a point and a bold statement. You don’t always need to use paint to accomplish this either, you can also use stains to add a difference in your cabinets and still make for a very modern touch in your kitchen.

Ultimately, it is important to remember your surrounding walls and rooms so this technique can be a finishing touch and really pull the whole house together.

Warming Up for Winter

This time of year many people are redecorating their living rooms with a cozier feel for the winter. Layers!!!! Lots of layering will turn any living space from cold to warm. Begin by moving your existing furniture around. Changing the placement of the furniture gives your space a new look. Scented candles add to the essence of the room. You can purchase the candles in many sizes. Throw pillows of all shapes, sizes, and color will be your new best friend. You will want to place them on the sofa, love seat any seating area in the living room. Throw covers are another form of layering as well. Also, rugs always add warmth to a room. Layer two rugs under your coffee table or end table; even under your entertainment center. It seems like a lot. At the same time, it will look amazing.

If possible adding leather furniture whether it be a chair, a stool, and ottoman anything with leather in it or on it; will really warm things up. Something about soft leather in the winter time gives things a cozy feel. Sometimes plants or any greenery would also be an ideal addition. Plants help breathe life into a space. If you don’t have much of a green thumb; cactuses or orchids are real easy plants to take care of. They also have a character. For a final touch in the living room. Adding a valance, a sheer curtain or even drapes to your windows will add an extra layer of warmth. Most importantly have fun and stay warm.

COOLER NIGHTS

Cooler Nights

Unfortunately, at this point in the year, most of us have had to turn on the heat. It’s always a reminder of the window that is a little too drafty, or the door that isn’t sealed as well as it should be – and makes us start considering the cold months that lie ahead of us. With the holidays ahead, it is also a time we do not want to start too many new projects. The good thing is, covering your windows is a fairly simple process that can solve a lot of your heat issues fairly quickly.

The best option for keeping the cool air out of your house is a hard window treatment – something that lies closest to your window opening. Rollers and roman shades will provide a barrier to the outdoors, but ultimately cellular shades are the go to product if you are looking to insulate the windows.

The greatest thing about the cellular shades are all of the options. They are available from the most basic, white fabric, that raise up and down with a string, to the most complex shades that you can operate from your couch with a touch of a remote control. But, let me back up in case you are not familiar with them. Cellular shades are a polyester shade, comprised of two layers of material that create an air pocket – therefore keeping out the cold air in the winter – and have the reverse effect of keeping in the air conditioning in the summer.

The shades are available in a wide variety of colors, and patterns. They can be made sheer – to still give the feeling of an open room, light filtering – private but let light into the room, or darkening – for those of you that enjoy sleeping in on the weekends or an occasional afternoon nap. They can be made as simple as pulling a string to raise them, or without cords that can just be pushed up or down. They also have a feature where they can both raise from the bottom and lower from the top – if you need some privacy in a nosy neighborhood. And the newest feature, is that they can be motorized – and operate from a remote control. The great part about all of these options is that you are open to matching the décor of any room in your home, and to fit the project into any budget as well.

Keep Cool Cellulars

Keep Cool Cellulars
We have all experienced the downfall of summer. That blazing heat that drives us crazy, cranking
the fans on high, and the air conditioners to the coldest setting. Of course this also means higher
electricity bills. With cellular shades you can cut that electric bill down and stay cool at the same time. Cellular shades are perfect for acting as an insulator trapping the cold in the summer as well as the warmth in the winter. Not only do cellular shades help with insulation, they also come in many different colors to match specific room settings. Cellular shades are made with a polyester material that can be a solid color of choice, or have a unique pattern design to it.  On top of the colors as well as the patterns, you also have the option to have the shade filter light through,  as well as being completely black out. The cellular shades are also very efficient for their minimal stacking at the top of the window giving more viewing pleasure when the shade is completely up. Going more into the technical parts and features about cellular shades, they can be upgraded to a top down bottom up feature which allows you to have a second cord that brings the top of the shade down while the ot6her cord brings the bottom of the shade up like normal. Another feature they have is the cordless upgrade. The cordless is a great feature the cuts out the hassle of cords getting snagged on something, tangled, or even breaking, Of course with people that have kids and or pets, it gives them one less toy to play with that you don’t want them playing with. To top off all of the amazing features and benefits, you can combined the cordless with the top down bottom up feature, allowing you to pull the top of the blind down to the desired level,  as well as the bottom up without the use of cords. With all of the features and benefits of cellular shades, there is no doubt that your summer will be more relaxing from the reduced stress of your electric bill, to having your rooms looking great while staying cool. Don’t let the heat get the best of you this summer, keep cool with cellular shades.
