Touching Back on Navy Blue

We spoke about Navy Blue being the new black last week briefly, but we wanted to touch back a bit more on this happening color. Not only is navy blue popping in up in all the clothing stores around this time of year, but it is starting to show up in home décor and design shops as well! While the initial thought may be that navy is too bold for your home, chances are you are overlooking some fun and easy ways to introduce navy into the home. We’ve put a together a list of ways to introduce this hue into your home as well!

  • Navy curtains. Curtains are a fantastic way to bring color into any space, because you are instantly adding a pop to the windows, and as the light shines through the fabric adding a hint of that color throughout the whole space! Navy curtains are available in a variety of fabrics, some heavier some lighter (chose depending on the space), some plain some patterned (again keep in mind the space – the color alone will make a statement).
  • Switching out your neutral colored bedding can quickly make a statement to your bedroom – and transform it into a nautical retreat!
  • An accent chair or end table. Adding a pop of color to your living room tends to be an easy upgrade, as most of us tend to stay with a neutral color palette in this space. Adding the bold color of navy to either an accent chair or end table will quickly make a statement in the space.
  • Add artwork. Artwork generally dresses up any space it is put into – but this season shy away from the neutral canvases and introduce a bold piece with a navy background or design that will make any mundane room look more modern.
  • Get out your paintbrush. This one is a little more of a stretch, but any wood furniture is instantly brought back to life with a fresh coat of navy paint – from your kitchen cabinets, to your bathroom vanity, even your boring wooden headboard. This tends to be a slightly more permanent statement – so make sure you’ll love it before you get to work!

Keep in mind, navy is bold – for the same reason you may accessorize with a scarf, or patterned shirt – but are unlikely to leave the house in head to toe navy – keep the color to an accent in your home as well!

Window Treatments 2018

It’s hard to believe trends can change so drastically from one year to another. Of course, there are go to styles which will never go out of style; but 2018 has brought some new, fun trends to the window treatment industry – maybe it’s your year to upgrade?

  • Bold patterns. Within the last few years, pattern has slowly been reintroduced to window treatments. This is compared to the 2000’s where the rule of thumb was neutral is better. Most of the bold patterns you can find now are available in Roller Shades. This provides a statement piece while remaining a modern, streamlined look in your window. They are also available in Roman Shades, which tend to appear slightly more traditional while the patterns provide them with a modern twist.
  • Natural materials. This is a trend that has held true over the last few years. Bringing in natural materials and fibers that make your rooms feel more tropical. There are a lot more roller shades that have been introduced in these materials which allows a more modern twist on the style. You can also stick with the natural bamboo shades which bring in actual reeds and shoots of bamboo and bring a feeling of warmth to any room.
  • Sheer materials. While the style of Serenity (two layers of sheers with a fabric blind in the middle) are still around, they have come a long way. These beautiful shades are produced in a variety of sizes, colors, and patterns now! There are also Cascade shades which operate more like a roller shade. These have expanded into a wide variety of natural patterns and colors. Even better, there is now a vertical version which is two layers of sheers with a solid in the middle that can be adjusted for privacy.
  • Adding dimension. As we mentioned, pattern has become extremely popular this year in the decorating industry. Adding decorative drapes over your blinds or shades is becoming increasingly popular as well. Not only does it allow you to bring in more texture, but it makes a statement in your overall room décor too.

These are just a few of the styles that are standing out in 2018 – not to mention the add-ons that have become easily accessible to the average homeowner – cordless and motorized. Hope this gets you thinking about your own windows!

Go Bold or Go Home!

Let’s cut to the chase. Most people go to their “safe place” when shopping for shades. “Oh my parents had roller shades so I will get them too”.. Why do we do this? it’s because we are afraid to step out of our box and live a little! We see a bold pattern or color and then settle for that simple neutral because we don’t want to take a chance. If we LOVE the color/pattern, and have to live with it long term; let’s step out of our comfort zones!
One of the best ways to begin stepping out of your comfort zone is with Roller Shades. These window coverings have come a LONG way since your Grandmothers’ thin, vinyl, snap-up roller shades. Roller shades are now offered with bright bold patterns made with a tightly woven polyester or cotton fabric. You can still go the neutral route if you choose but go for a textured neutral or a grey instead of a white or beige. The options are literally endless!
So why do we settle for the “plain jane” look when we have all of these wonderful options?! It’s time to let loose and go for that bright bold pattern! Make a statement with your window coverings and you’re sure to please anyone who comes to visit.
