It seems like curtains are a thing of the past. Everywhere you look people are redoing their homes, and just doing blinds.  There are even new types of blinds and shades that I had never seen being done before – bamboo, decorative shades, and decorative blinds.  They come in colors ranging from white to black, and everything in between.

The problem is, I really like curtains! I guess my dilemma is that I use curtains to decorate around my windows.  It seems really daring to choose a blind in a red or green or even brown, because chances are, the style will change within a few years.  Take for example, the grays that are everywhere! Two years ago, no one was even thinking about painting their whole house in different shades of gray, everyone was doing earth tones everywhere! Ten years ago people were doing whites and off white, and twenty years ago people were decorating in pastels!

A couple of years ago, I had invested in cellular shades – and let me tell you, I use the word investment because it cost around $1000 to redo every window in my house! At the time I chose off white, because I am generally really conservative in my decorating, but now I feel like my house looks boring compared to my friends.  So, I decided to look into updating the treatments.  Unfortunately, because I have so many windows it seems like changing all of the windows to new colors would become an investment once again.

After much debate, I decided to make a smart decision. Stick with the blinds I have, and use curtains too. I mean, even though they are less popular, there are still a ton of options out there.  There are a million websites that sell them, and they are available in local stores for a reasonable price.  The best part is, when they color style changes, I’m not going to feel guilty changing them! I was able to do put different colors in different rooms, and go a lot bolder than I would normally feel comfortable – I actually got “tangerine” side panels in my living room! They look great with the shades I already have up, and when I get bored with them I can change them.

I feel like, for the average person, instead of trying to keep up with the latest trends, realize that there is a reason curtains have been around for as long as they have! They can be just as “fun and funky” as new blinds, and in the long run, you will save a lot of money!
